This is the first thing that comes to mind, isn't it? How much time does it take for developers to first understand and then create what you need? However, there is a very subtle problem in this pricing approach. Where is the quality measured in this?

 

Let me explain with an example:

Joe has been working in the website development industry for 3 years. He can figure out your website needs in 2 days and develop it in 3 months.

 

Jack has been working in the software development industry for more than ten years. He will gather information about what you need in 1 week (because he puts more time into analysis) and can develop your website in three weeks. So now which one deserves more money? Surely you don't want to get paid less as you get more experienced and faster! Which brings us to the second method

 

How much sophistication does the customer need (don't kill a fly with a hammer)?

 

 

Well, every customer would say they want the best, but it's important to think as a software developer to understand us. Surely, a website for a defense ministry would need a higher level of sophistication in terms of security than a simple shampoo factory. A good developer knows and predicts that the attack vectors for a military website are far greater than for others. You will need to hire more expensive developers, although it might not affect the project's timeline. You surely don't want to use the highest-paid security threat analyst for a simple personal blog. You don't need to kill a fly with a hammer.
